Barbeque in Greenville
It has been said that Barbeque is the soundtrack of summer and here in Greenville that is certainly true. Pork, chicken, beef, or even tofu rubbed, seasoned, and cooked low and slow all before you even have to decide to sauce or not sauce! Whether you like a tender brisket sandwich (ME! ME!) or a plate of a variety of smoked meats with over-the-top sides SC’s Upstate has something for you. While you truly have so many choices of BBQ styles we have put together a list of our favorites – in no particular order.
- Mike & Jeff’s -3.2 miles- Is family owned and run for almost 30 years. Cooking over an open wood fire for 16 hours you can trust that it will be amazing. Open from 10am-4pm Tues through Saturday.
- Henry’s Smokehouse – 0.9 miles – Named “Best BBQ Spot in South Carolina” by 24/7 Tempo this casual restaurant features the leanest butts cooked over hickory logs then hand pulled and served to you either inside or out at the picnic tables.
- Bucky’s Bar-B-Q – 8.8 miles – When Wayne Preston’s electric bill came due with no money to pay it he set up a stand selling BBQ. From a roadside stand to three locations you just need to taste the special spice rub and the mac & cheese to see why.
- Moohogz Craft BBQ -1.5 miles – With a history in the Air Force, community involvement, and teaching it seems Moohogz has found the perfect home in Unity Park. Mixing Texas and Midwest bbq with additional flavors from the Caribbean has made this stop a tasty and unique one. They have plenty of choices including vegan options, but ribs are only offered on Saturday so plan accordingly!
- Home Team BBQ -1 mile – For a dine-in option my favorite is Home Team. A delicious salad with pepitas, grilled corn, & smoked poblano vinaigrette and your choice of smoked meat. Serve that with a “Snake in the Grass” cocktail and I am a happy camper! Open until midnight for those after-the-show diners.
- Moes’s Original BBQ -1 mile- Known for Alabama-style BBQ (dry rubbed, slow smoked, & sopped) Moe’s is listed as one of the “Top 10 Rib joints in the Country” by Relish. Be sure to give the mayo-based Alabama bbq sauce a try (I love it!) and don’t miss out on the cornbread.
- Lewis Barbcue – 1.2 miles- Bringing Texas bbq straight from Charleston! Growing up and developing his style in Texas while continuing to learn and improve his skills as pitmaster John Lewis is now known as one of the best in the country by multiple organizations. All I can say is don’t miss out on the brisket!!!
This is by far not a comprehensive list! You can book Greenville’s BBQ Trail Tour to have a taste of Henry’s, Bucky’s, and Mike & Jeff’s. For those dedicated to trying all the SC bbq, Discover South Carolina has a map with 220 bbq restaurants across the state including a section dedicated to the upstate. Greenville Festivals (and surrounding areas) are hard to beat and we don’t let you down when it comes to bbq either. Watch the calendar for Project Host BBQ Cookoff & Festival fundraiser in September, Hog & Barrel (Bourbon, BBQ, & Bacon) in October, Mauldin’s Annual BBQ Cookoff in September, and Southern Roots BBQ Reunion in April.
We even have our own Barbeque Benedict on the menu some mornings with a toasted biscuit, pulled pork, corn & cilantro slaw, poached egg, and a mustard bbq sauce hollandaise
